Metis Technologies, Inc., then competing under its earlier team name DesignFlowAI, was one of seven finalists in the 2026 MIT $100K Entrepreneurship Competition, MIT's flagship event for startups. The final took place on May 12, 2026.
The competition ran in three rounds and featured around 80 MIT startups. Sixteen reached the semifinal stage, spanning AI, healthcare, manufacturing, robotics and other emerging technologies. Seven advanced to the final. Past finalists include HubSpot, Akamai and iRobot.

The problem we pitched
A vehicle can contain up to 30,000 parts. Each one carries a history of decisions: why that material, why that thickness, why that radius. That history is scattered across PLM, shared drives, legacy PDFs, wikis, email threads, and the memory of engineers who have moved on. Design engineers spend a large share of their day looking for it instead of designing.
Metis works inside commercial CAD software. It surfaces design standards, manufacturing constraints and lessons learned for the exact feature an engineer is working on, and cites the source of every answer. As co-founder and CTO Rowell Castro told MIT SDM, "retrieval should be grounded in the context of the engineering artifact itself."
Where it started
Hiro Ogasawara (CEO) and Rowell Castro (CTO) met in 2023 as master's students in MIT's System Design and Management (SDM) program. They worked together on SDM projects, MIT hackathons and 2.156 (AI and Machine Learning for Engineering Design). The idea took shape in 2025 in 15.390, Entrepreneurship 101, taught by Bill Aulet.
Hiro spent about ten years in body design engineering at Toyota, where he earned 14 patents, and later worked at Apple as a product designer. Rowell spent about nine years at Shell in digital innovation. His MIT thesis on semantic learning in engineering design shapes how Metis structures and reasons over engineering knowledge.
DesignFlowAI has since become Metis. Read the full story from MIT SDM, and learn more about the competition at mit100k.org.

記事全文はMIT SDM(英語)、コンペの詳細はmit100k.org(英語)をご覧ください。
